The breed of this dog is a Rhodesian Ridgeback which I photographed at a sighthound event I attended with my sighthound. Named for the ridge of hair on their back that grows in the opposite direction.

Acrylic on illustration board
I love painting horses especially catching the action of their movement. I wish I could say that my reference photo for this painting was my own but an artist friend of mine, Joan Paredes from Montana gave me permisssion to paint this saddle bronc ride she caught with her camera at a rodeo. I changed several things-less cluttered background and some parts of the horse and rider.

Pet Portrait commission
After checking with the client, I will not include the dogs tags in the portrait since I feel they are distracting. This dog looks like he is smiling. Still a lot of work to do.

16x20 oil commission
After an hour and 15 minutes I have the chair and the pillows on the chair painted with a start to the background and a start to the dogs face. I am using hand made Williamsburg oil paints with Maroger medium. The values in this painting will change as I go along.

Oil on board
This is a commission I received so I thought I would blog my progress which is something I usually don't do. I started this commission by treating my board with many layers of gesso and black acrylic. The black background made it easy to show the customer the beginning drawing and will be a help with values since this will be a white dog.

Sunday is a good day to do what you want and that is why I painted "Rusty" an English Springer Spaniel. I love doing miniatures.

My dog, Halen the ibizan hound, loves to run. This colored pencil drawing was fun to do because of his happy expression when gets a chance to do what he loves to do. I also tried to capture the sense of movement in his legs and sometimes completely airborne.

This is a miniature oil painting on a 5x5 canvas of an Irish wolfhound. I love doing miniatures and my references photo was from years ago when I worked for a pet shop.

This painting is of a friend of mine in Vail, Arizona who has the life I always dreamed of- she is a true cowgirl. This will be the second painting of mine hanging in her house. The first was an oil painting of her bunnies. Visit her Etsy store where she sells her beautiful jewelry at www.etsy.com.shop/heartofacowgirl

6x8 Oil on canvas
I painted this red hen from my own photo I took while I was visiting in Vero Beach, Florida. This hen was one of many that supplied the farmer's market with fresh farm eggs to sell.

Colored Pencil on Mi Teintes Touch
My reference photo for this drawing is a photo I took in the Florida everglades many years ago. This bird and many more were at a wildlife refuge where we also took an airboat ride through the everglades. I am working on subjects for an exotic pet art display.

I met this guy on a farmette in Florida where the owners were celebrating their 100th year anniversary of operating a farmer's market. The two older Peterson brothers said their grandfather started the business and now they continue to sell fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs and milk along with souvenirs and other novelties. The animals were in pens arranged as a petty zoo atmosphere. The roosters seemed very happy with all their hens and this one liked looking at my camera. Just had to paint him.

I was going through my numerous dog photos from years ago and found a photo of a sheltie I met at a
dog event where I had my dog in a flyball demonstration. This little guys owner was so nice but I forgot her name and the dogs name and failed to write it on the back of the photo. I love painting these little miniatures.

This young golden retriever was at a dog lure coursing event to be socialized and have a try at coursing. It seemed to have a lot of fun that day so I had to do this colored pencil drawing.

This is my actually first painting of the new year. After painting commissions over the holidays I felt I had to paint a subject I chose and also needed something blue for the Hanover Art Guild "In the Blue" show. I used an old photo I took years ago of a bluebird that flew into my tree from the neighbors. I don't have bluebirds coming to my feeder but I wish I did.

Oil on Wood
It has been a while since I did a pet portrait on wood but this was a special request from a previous customer for a friend. It needs to dry then varnished-hope he likes it.

I do believe I have Cardinal fever. I keep seeing more at my feeder and I keep snapping their photos and then I have to paint them. These three were painted before Christmas maybe I will continue the
series in 2013.
